CANARIE announced today that its Cybersecurity Initiatives Program (CIP) will deliver intrusion detection systems (IDS) and funding support to 80+ eligible research and education (R&E) organizations. CIP participating organizations that take advantage of this new funding will join an established community of Canadian R&E cybersecurity professionals who have been actively collaborating on intrusion detection as part of a joint security project introduced by CANARIE and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada in 2018.
Intrusion detection systems track suspicious network behaviour and can find new threats as they emerge. Organizations that choose to take part in this IDS initiative will be able to customize their IDS device to suit their existing infrastructure and receive funding to support the participation of cybersecurity staff in the national IDS collaboration. Participating organizations also gain access to purpose-built, national analytics platforms that aggregate all intrusion data across the sector for benchmarking, early analysis, and mitigation of intrusions.
All organizations that participate in the IDS initiative also benefit from knowledge sharing, extensive training and skills development, and most importantly, contributing toward a stronger, more secure Canada.
Launched in November 2020, the CIP funds priority initiatives that strengthen the cybersecurity of Canada’s research and education sector with advanced technologies, improved processes, and broadened expertise. These initiatives are reviewed and recommended for funding by the Cybersecurity Advisory Committee and delivered to eligible organizations through the provincial and territorial partners in Canada’s National Research and Education Network (NREN), in which CANARIE is the federal partner. To date, more than 80% of eligible Canadian R&E organizations have enrolled in the CIP.
How to Participate
To select the IDS initiative, organizations must first enroll in the Cybersecurity Initiatives Program. To confirm your organization’s eligibility for the CIP or to initiate enrollment, please contact the NREN Partner in your province or territory.
Organizations that have already enrolled in the CIP will be contacted by NREN Partners with instructions for selecting the IDS initive.
All initiatives funded through the CIP are intended to integrate with each other to strengthen cybersecurity at the organization level, and in turn the overall security of the entire sector.
