IT Professional Development Session: “How can Learning Communities change the way we view Professional Development?” (Charlottetown, PEI)

May 18 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

$20.00 – $25.00

How can Learning Communities change the way we view Professional Development?

In this presentation, Jenn will describe the concept of a Professional Learning Community (or PLC), and how the formation of these communities is changing the face of Professional Development (PD) at Holland College. The transition from “one-off” PD sessions to integrated, long-term research being conducted by PLCs, is a huge cultural change for Holland College, but one that is needed to maintain high instructional standards from our faculty.

Several key topics will be addressed by comparing the Holland College environment with that of an IT company, including the logistical formation of PLCs, the accountability of employees in their PLCs, and the dissemination of research findings to the larger organization.

Jenn Slemmer has been a Learning Manager in Bioscience Technology at Holland College since 2011, after completing post-doctoral research at UPEI from 2006-2011; it was during those five years at UPEI that she discovered her love for teaching as a sessional lecturer in the departments of Biology and Chemistry. She earned her BA in Psychology at the University of Richmond in 1997, and her Masters and PhD in Neuroscience at the Erasmus University, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 2005. She is currently completing her Masters of Education degree at UPEI, with a special focus on Leadership in Learning for College Educators. Originally from Pennsylvania, she is now married to an Islander, and is happy to call PEI her home, where she and her husband, Chris, and their two cats, live in Charlottetown.
